TOKYO, Dec 31, 2004 (AFX-Europe via COMTEX) -- The world's 26 major mobile phone operators and telecommunication equipment-makers have agreed to work on a global standard for a super fast mobile transmission technology, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun business daily reported, without quoting sources.
The group includes NTT DoCoMo and NEC of Japan, Britain's Vodafone Group PLC, US cellphone carrier Cingular Wireless, Alcatel of France and Siemens AG of Germany, the newspaper said.
Using the new technology called Super 3G, the group plans to launch by 2009 global services for transmitting large volumes of moving images by mobile phones at a speed 10 times faster than the current 3G (third-generation) technology, the report said.
Super 3G can boost mobile transmission speeds to a range of 30 to 100 megabits per second to match existing land line fiber optic telecom technology, allowing movies, games or home videos to be played on handsets with a much higher resolution, it said.
The report said the cost of upgrading the mobile telecommunication network for Super 3G in Japan may top 100 bln yen (975 mln usd).
The report could not be confirmed by Vodafone's Japan unit, NTT DoCoMo Inc, or NEC Corp.

日本經濟新聞31日報導，亞洲、美國和歐洲的26家行動電話服務商與資料傳輸設備製造商，已經同意統一下一代行動電話技術的標準，以期使高速傳輸高畫質影像的夢想能夠早日實現。
傳輸高畫質影像的服務最快在2009年將可在全球各地推出，這項取名為超級第三代行動電話（Super 3G）的技術，將提供每秒30個到100個百萬位元（Mb）的傳輸速度，10倍於目前在日本已逐漸普及的3G服務。
已簽約的公司包括著名的行動電話服務商，如日本的NTT移動通信網（NTT DoCoMo）、英國的伏得風集團、美國的Cingular無線公司，和中國大陸的中國移動通信公司；以及資料傳輸設備製造商，如NEC公司、法國阿爾卡 特公司（Alcatel）和德國西門子公司。
各家公司將自2007年6月起採用新規格，並開始商業營運擬議的服務，和開發設備。
超級3G行動電話服務也會使即時傳送高畫質影像成為可能，這項升級預料將激勵廠商開發較大螢幕的手機，以供手機使用者利用拍照、玩遊戲和觀賞電影等功能。
統一標準也將有助於行動電話服務商提高跨系統的電話連線品質，顧客也可使用不同國家提供的共同服務。
由於手機規格也會統一，設備製造商將可藉大規模生產來降低成本。
NTT移動通信網正和製造商合作研發必要的資料傳輸設備，以便提供高速傳輸服務。
該公司計畫最快2009年會在日本提供這類服務，估計在基地台升級和其他方面的投資高達1,000億日圓。
簽約的公司也致力於使傳輸速度更快的第四代行動電話（4G）商業化，但這項技術將使用不同的頻譜，且開發設備需要較長時間。【2005/01/01 經濟日報】
